Power
India's power sector is undergoing its most dramatic transformation—moving from a coal-dominated centralised grid to a diversified system with 500 GW of renewable capacity by 2030, smart meters, microgrids and a national hydrogen mission. The Power Sector Skill Council (PSSC) prepares workers for this energy transition across generation, transmission, distribution and renewable energy.
Sector Overview
Power sector roles span operating thermal, hydro, nuclear and renewable generation plants; maintaining extra-high-voltage (EHV) transmission lines and substations; and managing last-mile distribution networks. Smart grid implementation—advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), demand response and energy storage—requires technicians with strong digital and data skills in addition to traditional electrical knowledge.
Key Skills & Competencies
Career Progression
Technicians join power utilities (NTPC, NHPC, DISCOMs) or IPPs as trainees, progressing to supervisor, assistant engineer and section head. Engineers build careers in planning, protection engineering and energy management.
